What Affects the Cost of
Your Fence?

Six variables account for most of the difference between a low quote and a high one.

1. Total Linear Footage

Fencing is priced per linear foot, not by lot size. The total length of your fence line is the primary cost driver — have a rough perimeter measurement ready when requesting a quote.

2. Fence Height

Taller fences cost more per linear foot in both materials and labor. Fences over 6 ft also require a building permit in most Austin-area jurisdictions, which adds to the total.

3. Material & Style

Material is the largest cost variable after footage. More detail-intensive styles — horizontal, board-on-board, cap and trim — require additional labor compared to standard vertical privacy.

4. Gates

Walk gates and drive gates are priced separately from the fence line. Cost depends on width, material, and hardware. A double-drive gate provides significantly more than a standard walk gate.

5. Terrain & Accessibility

Sloped yards, rocky soil, narrow side yards, and limited access to equipment increase labor time. These conditions are assessed during the on-site estimate and reflected in the quote.

6. Demolition of Existing Fence

Removing an old fence adds to the total project cost, depending on the material and how the posts were originally set. Concrete-set posts take more time to extract than direct-buried posts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the most popular fence style in Austin right now?

Vertical cedar privacy and horizontal fences are our most-requested styles. Horizontal in particular has surged in Austin’s newer neighborhoods — homeowners want the clean, modern look, and it photographs better than traditional privacy fencing. Board-on-board is our top recommendation for corner lots and shared property lines where both sides of the fence are visible from the street.

Do I need a permit to build a fence in Austin?

In most Austin residential zones, fences 6 feet and under don’t require a permit — but exceptions exist based on your zoning district and proximity to a street. Any fence over 6 feet almost always requires one. HOA communities have their own approval process on top of the city’s. We confirm permit requirements during your on-site estimate so there are no surprises after installation.

How long does installation take?

The timeline depends on the size and complexity of the project. Posts set in concrete need 24–48 hours to cure before panels are attached — that time is accounted for in the project schedule, not tacked on at the end.

Should I repair my existing fence or replace it?

If your fence is under 10 years old with isolated damage — a few rotted boards or one leaning post — repair is usually the right call financially. Once a fence hits 15+ years with widespread rot, multiple failing posts, or compromised rails, you’re typically spending more on repairs over time than a full replacement would cost. We’ll give you a straight answer on which makes more sense when we see it in person.

Do the prices above include gates?

No — gates are quoted separately because the cost varies significantly based on width, material, and hardware. A single walk gate and a double drive gate with an automatic opener are completely different projects. Every gate will appear as its own line item in your written estimate, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for.
